January 2019 Cinders

Cinders for January, 2019 was mailed in two separate mailings to members on Saturday, January 5 and Monday, January 7, 2019.  Each month, and particularly in those months where the nearly 350 copies cannot be mailed on the same day, test letters addressed to the Editor and the Secretary and included as a means of knowing when the mailing has cleared the U. S. Postal Service.

During the week ending Saturday, January 12, the USPS had some serious reliability problems in the Philadelphia Processing & Distribution Center.  The mailing of about 125 copies made on Saturday, January 5, seemed to survive.  The stamps on the envelope were cancelled, the envelopes barcoded and these copies seeming were delivered to everyone on Monday, January 7.

However, such was not the case for the approximately 225 copies mailed on Monday, January 7.  The test copy addressed to the Editor was not delivered until Friday, January 11.  The stamp was not cancelled (although this frequently happens) and the envelope WAS barcoded, but this gives no proof as to when the envelope (and mailing) was processed in Philadelphia.

IMPORTANT!!  If you received your copy of January CINDERS in the latter fashion, we need to know when you received the envelope.  We’d ask only those members who are on the internet to respond to this request, sending same to at your earliest convenience.  A protest has been filed with the Postal Inspection Service as well as the Philadelphia Processing & Distribution Center.

Our meeting on Thursday evening, January 17 will feature another Dale Woodland PowerPoint classic, Here Comes the Circus featuring coverage between 1981 and 2017, from Southeastern Pennsylvania and some New York, Maryland and upstate Pennsylvania.

As a reminder, Creekside Co-Op, the nice food store adjacent to SEPTA’s Elkins Park station, has closed its doors.
